Mumbai’s multi-genre badboy ‘Sickflip’ collaborates with Manchester’s finest ‘Chunky’, (Swamp 81 stalwart, Levelz crew member, and Riot Jazz frontman). Sickflip hits us with a skippy, bloopy, and bass-heavy Baile Funk joint. Perfectly selected by Chunky to bring his off-kilter, bubbling rave friendly barsmanship. This unique combination is set to turn heads, mash-up dancefloors and bring future thinking underground world music movements closer together.
SickFlip's inspiration:
“I first hung out with the Levelz crew when they visited India for Vh1 Supersonic Festival in 2018, and found myself really inspired with the energy and bare talent coming from Manchester. Chunky, especially, stood out with his rhymes and flow for me.
How this track happened has actually surprised me and given me belief that music is truly a universal language. Having met him just once before, that too a few years back, without any premise or direction from my side, we now have a track that we can’t wait to put out in the world. I had worked on the instrumental first, which I shared with my manager Ayush who passed it on to 4NC¥ label head Pavan - they decided to have Chunky jump on the tune and thankfully, he liked the beat too. A few days later I heard his recorded vocals on it and everything fit like Tetris. I couldn’t have imagined the beat would take such an interesting turn until I had heard his parts on it
This track dives deeper into my love for percussive rhythms and heavy bass. I’m deeply influenced by percussion in particular and have a live property called ‘SHAKA’ that showcases percussive / tribal influenced music from all parts of the world.
With every release I try to put out what really inspires me and drives my musical landscape into newer territories. This one in particular is exciting since I’ve been digging the percussive baile funk vibe for a while now and to merge it with fast paced rhymes makes for a very unique combination of elements.
The visual communication behind this release is done by my brother Samresh who goes by ‘Studio Krygn’. Having collaborated with him on a lot of projects, this will be the first album cover art that is done by him."
About Sickflip:
Building up a storm that’s finally making loud rumbles, new age electronica artist SickFlip’s driving force is an amalgamation of travel, music and collaboration. Known for his love for organic world instrumentation incorporated onto fresh, electronic rhythms, his shows are all about dance, energy, good vibes and memorable experiences.
In a short span of time since his emergence on the scene, Sickflip has grown as an artist. The biggest push came last year when he was featured on the legendary FACT Mag’s ‘Against The Clock’ – a video series in which artists are given 10 minutes to create a track from scratch, with FACT filming every step along the way in real time. Past high-profile guests on the series include Chromeo, Shlohmo, Four Tet, Yaeji, Tom Misch, Daedelus, KiNK and many more.
Having experimented with a variety of sounds in his music production over the years, he released two collaborative singles in the year 2020 - 'Roshni' with Ritviz and Seedhe Maut which found itself in a unique electronica meets rap meets Hindi crossover space and became the summer anthem for the year. The track peaked on #10 on Youtube India 'Trending' charts on the release weekend. And, ‘White Collar’ with Kaam Bhaari (of Gully Boy fame) where he dived deeper into hip-hop.
Known for belting out worldwide digital releases on record labels, he has also been tasked to create official remixes for Midival Punditz’s single ‘Nukhta’ as well as for Finnish bass artist Axel Thesleff, while producing a full-length album for Irish singer- songwriter Cian Finn and seeing ‘Desert Bae’ from his previous EP hit half a million plays across all platforms.
Ensuring his audiences stay on the dance floor, he curates and hosts Pineapples – a good-vibes day party that celebrates fresh music on a breezy rooftop, with conceptual decor and the backdrop of a beautiful sunset.
Broadening his scope beyond the console, he also hosts a monthly radio show called Shuffle Mode on boxout.fm, which encompasses obscure sounds with deep contrasts from all over the world in an informal mix with a bit of his spoken word talking about the music.
A festival regular, last year saw him perform at Magnetic Fields Festival 2019, NH7 Weekender, Shillong 2019, YUV Fest, Pune 2019 and Boxout Weekender, Delhi 2019 while he has previously headlined Bud X Delhi and played sets at Sunburn, VH1 Supersonic, EVC, Timeout72 Goa and EDC India sharing stage with the likes of Troyboi, Grandtheft, Netsky, Borgore, Jason Derulo, Major Lazer, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Alix Perez
